Dollar and a dream!

If I had a million dollars...

What would I do if this project actually succeeded? Well, I‘d placed the million in a high yield money market or saving account and spend off the interest making dreams come true. Every year, I would spend 50% of the only interest earned giving the money back to people who contributed and the other 50% would go towards governments taxes on this beast, charities and non-profits, legal fees, banks fees, savings to put back into the project and a small portion for my little dreams. I wouldn't actually touch the million dollars.

If it did succeed, how could I forget all those people who helped make this dream into a reality? It would be a community effort, so the money should try to benefit everyone who contributed.

A million dollars placed into a 4.50% high yield saving account would amount to $45,000. 50%, $22,500. Imagine the first year, I give $22,500 to a random person who contributed a $1. The next year, I would give 22 other people $1000. Or buy 225 people each $100 gifts from their Amazon Wish List. The ideas are endless.

So think of this as a game show or a lottery. Your $1 could end up funding something really cool and you could get your money back plus a couple of extra dollars.

And now the prize portion of the show begins...

Ever since I was a kid, I loved game shows. I used to watch all of them with my mom, The Price is Right, $100,000 Pyramid, Family Feud, Hollywood Squares, and my all time favorite Press Your Luck.

While I doubt I'll be on The Price is Right, I can be Bob Barker. Here's my little game: The first person who refers 7 other people to donate a dollar to my cause will win this "Premiere Super Saver Movie Ticket Admit One" from the Regal Entertainment Group.

Rules to win:
  1. You already donated a dollar and you get 7 other new people to donate too.

Yup, that's it. Pretty easy huh? First person who "refers" 7 people wins.

So tell a friend. Tell 7 friends. If you haven't donated yet, give a buck and you're eligible. Fine print: I bought the tickets from Costco and only used one. I was supposed to see Inside Man, ATL, MI 3 but unfortunately I don't have the time. The ticket can only be used at Regal movie theaters. On a side note, I love watching movies. When I was younger, I wanted to retire owning a dollar rental video store. I would just sit on the couch all day and watch movies. Unfortunately the rise of Netflix and video on demand pretty much killed that idea.

Let the "fun" begin...

Kyle from the One Red Paperclip

On a whim, I decided to call Kyle from the One Red Paperclip since his cell was listed on the web site. Surprisingly, he answered, we spoke briefly and then I emailed him the URL for the site. He replied back, which was cool, with some honest feedback and inspiration. Although he didn't give a dollar, his opinion and email were worth a lot more. Thanks Kyle!

He did recommend www.the1secondfilm.com for inspiration. Unfortunately the site seems to be down but I did locate their myspace page.

Dream Big!

“We need to dream big dreams, propose grandiose means if we are to recapture the excitement, the vibrancy, and pride we once had.” - Coleman Young

Anything in life is possible, we just have to try. There a million reasons why I shouldn't even started this. The Million Dollar Homepage already did it, it's not possible, I need my dollar for something else. Countless others. We tend to look at the failures, risks or faults instead of focusing on the outcome.

Will I succeed? I don't know, but imagine if I did. All I can say right now is I made an effort and I'm willing to see how far it will go.

Give a dollar, feel good and tell a friend.

flaws

before i get spammed with questions, i know there are a couple of flaws with this little project. with my current method, i'm not really getting a dollar per person. minus paypal or amazon fees, i'm only really getting around 70 cents per person. $1.30 per person doesn't really sound as good $1 from a million people. i was trying to avoid adverts on the site but i think i might have to make up the difference somehow. sponsors anyone?

am I really gonna enter one million blog entries for each person who donates? not sure but it seems less personal to try to automate it. (thanks kris, hehe). with all ideas born at 3 o'clock in the morning, there are things that need to be worked out.

Welcome

Hi. My name is Mark and I have a dream. I want to be a millionaire. I‘m just a regular good guy with a wife, two kids and lots of dreams. I want to provide a good life for my wife and kids. I‘d love to visit my relatives every year. I would love to fly a plane one day, rv across the united states or play in a World Series of Poker Main event.

Here‘s where I need your help. For the next year, I am looking to collect one dollar from a million people over the web through PayPal or Amazon donations. With your contribution, I‘ll post your name (or business), web site and location on my web site. With a little luck and help, you‘ll help me fulfill my dream and maybe yours.

I‘m not a bot!
I‘m a real person and this isn’t a marketing scam or email spam collection thing. You can find me on Myspace, LinkedIn, and a couple of other places.

I love great ideas.
I love great ideas. Every since the inception of the web, there has been a lot of great ideas exposed to the everyday joe. From Google to Craiglist, there are countless companies and individuals who are working everyday to make people‘s lives easier or better. A great idea can help spark new business opportunities or can help bring people closer.

Here are some great ideas that helped in someway spark my idea:

My Idea
My simple idea is to try to become a millionaire by collecting one US dollar from a million people. I‘ll be primarily using the power of ‘social networking‘ through the web to try to accomplish this feat. I‘m a natural introvert and have a small circle of friends. I loved the movie Six Degrees of Separation with Will Smith, the six degrees of Kevin Bacon and the Six Degrees web site back in 1999. It‘d be cool to break out of my comfort zone and ‘know‘ a million people. So donate a dollar and help promote the cause!

How I’d spend the money?
Being conservative and practical, I would keep the million in the bank and spend the interest fulfilling my dreams. A million dollars opened in an ING direct account earning 4.15% annual interest would be $41,500 a year (less taxes, of course). I‘d still keep my day job but the money would go to fulfilling dreams. Of course, I wouldn’t leave out all the people that helped me fulfill my dream. What good is living out a dream if you can’t share it with the people that helped you along? Imagine playing in the World Series of Poker with me. Or flying to Tahoe, LA, NJ?

How will you benefit?
There are lots of ways you‘d benefit from my a little project:

1. You could help someone fulfill his dream.
How many times in your life can you say you helped someone with their dream?
2. Self Promotion.
Like other projects on the web, promotion is the key. You might be a blogger looking for the next big thing or just want to promote your blog. Musicians, you could use the exposure to promote your band’s web site or next gig. You could also want to promote your business or great idea!
3. Good will.
Like all good citizens, I would donate a percentage to worthy non-profits and causes. You could always recommend a cause and I would gladly help out.
4. Your dream?
My dream could also be your dream. Your one-dollar could lead to something down the line.
5. Be a part of something bigger?
Who knows what this experiment could lead to? It could be the next six degrees. It could be the next pay it forward. Be a part of it.
6. Possible movie?
It‘s possible this could end up being a movie, a HBO special or at the very least a web spoof.
7. Reconnect with someone.
If you like the idea, share it with someone you haven‘t spoken to in a while. At the very least, it will give you a reason to contact them again.

Can I contribute more than a dollar?
No. I would rather you didn‘t. Other projects have succeeded faster because they they accepted donations greater than a dollar. I‘d prefer you got 2, 5, 10, 100 or 1000 more people to contribute instead. It spreads the idea faster and maybe reconnects you with someone you haven‘t talked to in a while.

Is there a deadline?
I‘m hoping to accomplish the goal within a year, 365 days from today. So if can reach 2740 people a day, I can reach it. The first month or two might be slow but hopefully the growth rate will grow exponentially afterwards. If I don‘t accomplish it within a year, I‘ll go on until I do.
